About this program
York University's Music BFA is a 120-credit four-year degree offered through the Department of Music in AMPD. Founded on principles of diversity and inclusion, the program is unique in recognizing students with musical talent and ambition who arrive with a wide variety of musical backgrounds. All first-year Music students enter the BFA program. After first year, students whose interests centre on music studies (music history, criticism, and scholarly research) may choose to move to the Honours BA program. Specialization areas include classical music performance, jazz, world music, gospel, composition, digital/electronic music, and contemporary improvisation. York was the first music program in Canada to include jazz as an integral part of its curriculum and the first to include gospel music. The Department of Music at York offers a five-year Honours BFA/BEd program in conjunction with the Faculty of Education.
