BA in Theatre
York University — Toronto, Ontario
About this program
York University's BA in Theatre, offered through the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD), immerses students in all aspects of theatre and performance through a rigorous cultivation of creative, practical, and critical skills. All Theatre majors begin with a common first-year curriculum in Acting, Stagecraft, and Introduction to Theatre and Performance, establishing foundational knowledge before specializing in their interests. From second year onward, students choose their unique artistic pathway through a flexible mix of hands-on studio courses and seminar-based learning in directing, production and design, playwriting and dramaturgy, and theatre and performance studies. The program emphasizes developing transferable skills including creative problem solving, leadership, teamwork, time management, and organization. Students have abundant performance and production opportunities through large-scale Theatre @ York productions, the student-run playGround Festival, and industry partnerships with professional theatre companies and international programs. The program is ranked #2 in Ontario and #3 in Canada for Performing Arts.
