About this program

California State University, Fullerton's NASM-accredited School of Music offers the Bachelor of Music in the Voice Concentration through its Vocal, Choral, and Opera program. The program offers students a specialized yet comprehensive education preparing them for careers as classical and operatic performers, teachers, and conductors. Classical Singer Magazine has recognized the CSUF Opera Theatre and vocal programs for excellence in training young singers for professional operatic careers. Private lessons in voice are the core of the BM Voice program and are taught solely by members of the respected faculty. The program also includes courses in vocal literature, vocal pedagogy, art song, opera literature, and foreign-language diction. Students receive individual attention and perform frequently in recitals and master classes. The CSUF Opera Theatre presents a program of opera excerpts and one-act operas each fall providing performance opportunities for singers, while each spring a fully staged operatic production with orchestra is mounted. Past productions have included Elixir of Love, Candide, La Bohème, Street Scene, Magic Flute, Die Fledermaus, The Crucible, Le nozze di Figaro, and Gianni Schicchi. Beyond the campus, productions are offered at Leisure World in Orange County and other venues. Singers participate in all aspects of opera production including staging, costumes, props, makeup, set design, and lighting. CSUF's four outstanding choral ensembles — University Singers, Concert Choir, The Singing Titans (TTBB), and Titan Voices (SSAA) — regularly tour internationally and have performed with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. The School of Music is the birthplace of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra. All music majors must show basic proficiency as a singer or instrumentalist to gain entrance to the School of Music. The fall audition process is two-phase: all singers submit a video prescreen, and those who pass are invited to a live audition. All university applications must be submitted through Cal State Apply regardless of audition status. Even students denied university admission may be advocated for admission by the School of Music based on musical talent.
