BFA in Acting

California State University-Fullerton — Fullerton, CA

BFAActingFullerton, CA

About this program

California State University, Fullerton's NAST-accredited Department of Theatre and Dance offers the BFA in Theatre with an Acting Concentration, a pre-professional degree preparing students for careers in theatre, plays, musicals, television, and film. The program seeks students who exhibit exceptional talent, motivation, and commitment, and combines rigorous coursework with ample opportunity to apply training in performance. The average student-to-faculty ratio is 12:1, and faculty include award-winning Broadway, off-Broadway, national tour, television, and film performers, directors, and playwrights. The BFA is a 132-unit degree. Because BFA students choose a specific concentration — Acting, Devised Performance/Physical Theatre, or Musical Theatre — they have very few electives due to the high impact of required courses in their specific field. All Theatre and Dance students are eligible and encouraged to audition for all campus productions regardless of degree type. Third- and fourth-year BFA Acting students are eligible to audition for main stage productions. All BFA students are required to participate in 3 units of Production Crew (278B/478B), which develops technical knowledge through participation in the production process. Students must also meet with an advisor each semester. Upon enrollment, incoming BFA Acting students participate in a New Student Placement Audition to determine appropriate course placement. The program operates on an open casting, competitive model — CSUF is NAST-accredited, which requires all BFA students to perform in at least one production within their concentration. A minimum C (2.0) grade is required for all courses applied to the BFA, and a minimum B (3.0) is expected in performance courses. There is no cut system; once accepted, CSUF is committed to supporting the student's training through graduation. The program celebrates student authenticity and practices inclusivity, compassion, grit, and work ethic, embracing diversity, collaboration, and creativity.
