About this program
California State University, Fullerton's NASM-accredited School of Music offers the Bachelor of Music in the Jazz and Commercial Music Concentration, preparing students for professional performance and composing/arranging careers in the Southern California region and throughout the nation. The program also includes a Jazz Vocal Emphasis led by Professor Teryn Ré, focusing on developing the individual vocalist's unique voice while building improvisational and ensemble skills. Jazz ensembles include the Fullerton Jazz Orchestra, Fullerton Big Band and Latin Ensemble, Jazz Small Groups (combos), and the Jazz Singers. From these ensembles students prepare for professional jazz and commercial performance opportunities throughout the region. The ensembles perform a wide variety of styles from cutting-edge contemporary music by Maria Schneider and Jim McNeely to the classics of Count Basie and Duke Ellington, on campus and at top local, regional, and international jazz festivals. CSUF jazz groups have been selected as winning ensembles and combos at the Reno Jazz Festival, Fullerton College Jazz Festival, and Pacific Coast Jazz Festival. The curriculum includes applied lessons, jazz arranging, jazz theory, jazz pedagogy, music production, and opportunities to study vocal jazz styles, participate in vocalist/instrumentalist workshops, and perform as soloists and in the Jazz Singers ensemble.
