About this program

California State University, Fullerton's NASM-accredited School of Music offers the Bachelor of Music in the Piano Pedagogy Concentration, preparing students for careers as private and group piano teachers. Nationally recognized, this is described as the most comprehensive piano-pedagogy program in the state of California. The program provides in-depth training for individual and group piano instruction alongside a full BM curriculum of applied performance, theory, music history, and ensemble. Coursework covers teaching methodology, pedagogy philosophy, repertoire selection, techniques for teaching music reading at multiple levels, group piano and electronic laboratory instruction, and extensive supervised practice teaching. Students study the full range of pedagogical approaches including intervallic, multi-key, and combination reading approaches, and develop deep familiarity with pedagogical repertoire from Baroque through contemporary styles. The Piano and Organ Division Coordinator, Prof. Alison Edwards, is active as a performer, teacher, and scholar. The BM Piano Pedagogy curriculum at CSUF includes all the hallmarks of the BM degree — applied study, theory, history, and ensemble — while integrating the specialized pedagogy coursework that prepares graduates to establish and maintain teaching studios or work in community music schools, colleges, and music education programs. All music majors must show basic proficiency as a singer or instrumentalist to gain entrance to the School. Even students denied university admission may be advocated for admission by the School based on talent.
