BM in Music (Vocal Performance)
California State University-Fresno — Fresno, CA
About this program
California State University, Fresno's NASM-accredited School of Music offers the Bachelor of Music in the Vocal Performance Option, a professional degree preparing students for careers as classical and operatic performers, studio voice teachers, and candidates for advanced graduate study. The program provides intensive private voice study alongside rigorous training in music theory, music history, ear training, keyboard proficiency, and ensemble performance through choral singing and opera theatre participation. All BM students enter as Pre-Music Majors for their first four semesters before declaring their specific option. All BM options require 120–132 total units; GE areas C1, C2, and IC are waived. Students must meet with a designated faculty advisor each semester and attend at least 15 concerts per semester. The Vocal Performance Option culminates in a Senior Recital. Fresno State's Opera Theatre is the centerpiece of the vocal performance experience. Recent productions include La Bohème, Madama Butterfly, Der Fledermaus, Hansel and Gretel, and the world premiere of Lucinda y las Flores de la Nochebuena. Students also participate in the Art Song Festival and in choral ensembles including the Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, University Singers, Women's Choir, and Men's Choir. Collaborative pianist Dr. Drew Quiring provides accompaniment for auditions and lessons.
