BADanceFresno, CA

About this program

California State University, Fresno offers a BA in Dance through the NAST-accredited Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of Arts and Humanities. The program involves students in creative inquiry, embodied and inventive collaboration, and skillful expression of ideas in order to prepare them for lives of leadership, service, and excellence in the arts, culture, and business of the future. Students explore performance, training, design, technology, and research within a multifaceted liberal arts context, developing individual artistic identities and the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse workplace. The degree provides a strong foundation for work in the arts and entertainment industries or for further training at graduate schools and conservatories, and also prepares students for non-performance careers that benefit from the communication, creative, and leadership skills developed through dance training. The department is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) and regularly participates in the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival (ACTF) and the American College Dance Association (ACDA), both of which have honored numerous Fresno State students at regional and national levels. The major requires 54 units including Introduction to Acting or Fundamentals of Acting, Theatre Crafts, Physical Theatre, Balance BodyMind, Music in Choreography, Creative Movement for Children, Dance History, Dance Choreography, Pilates Mat, Philosophical Bases and Trends in Dance (satisfies GE Area UD 3), World Dance, a Modern Dance Technique sequence (DANCE 117A, B, and C or D), a Ballet Technique sequence (DANCE 158A, B, and C or D), University Dance Theatre (production), and Contemporary Dance Ensemble (production). Students must demonstrate competency in either Modern Dance or Ballet. CR/NC grading is not permitted in the dance major. Students must meet with their advisor each semester for program approval.
