About this program

California State University, Fresno's NASM-accredited School of Music offers the Bachelor of Music in the Jazz Studies Option, a professional degree preparing students for careers as jazz performers. The program provides intensive private jazz instruction alongside rigorous training in music theory, jazz harmony, jazz history, ear training, improvisation, and ensemble performance. All BM students enter as Pre-Music Majors for their first four semesters before declaring their specific option. All BM options require 120–132 total units; GE areas C1, C2, and IC are waived for BM students. Students must meet with a designated faculty advisor each semester and attend at least 15 concerts per semester. The Jazz Studies Option culminates in a Senior Recital. The Fresno State Jazz Orchestra is nationally recognized, receiving recognition in DownBeat Magazine's 48th Annual Student Music Awards for Outstanding Undergraduate College Performance. Faculty are active professional jazz musicians. Dr. Teodross Avery served as a Fulbright Scholar and has been recognized internationally.
