About this program
California State University, Fresno's NASM-accredited School of Music offers the Bachelor of Music in the Music Education Option (Pre-Certification), one of 17 CSU programs approved as a California CSET waiver program. Students who complete this degree with a 2.67 GPA or higher do not need to take the CSET exam in Music to enter the teaching credential program — subject matter proficiency is satisfied by the degree. The program has a 100% placement rate for graduates who complete the credential and has produced more than 150 music teachers since 2010. All BM students enter as Pre-Music Majors for their first four semesters. After completing all Pre-Music coursework, students must submit both a Change of Major Form and a BM Music Education Option Application to formally declare the option (minimum 2.67 GPA required). All BM options require 120–132 total units; GE areas C1, C2, and IC are waived for BM students. Students must consult with a designated faculty advisor each semester and attend at least 15 concerts per semester. The curriculum prepares students to teach music at all levels K–12 including methods for all instrument families, conducting, elementary music pedagogy, and hands-on field experiences with school-age children. The Music Education Barrier Exam — testing sight-reading, sight-singing, piano accompaniment, and primary instrument proficiency — must be passed before the 8th semester. A half-recital (Senior Recital) is required for graduation. The post-baccalaureate credential is completed through the Kremen School of Education at Fresno State; students should begin the Kremen application process during their senior year.
