BM in Instrumental Performance

California State University-Fresno — Fresno, CA

BMMusicFresno, CA

About this program

California State University, Fresno's NASM-accredited School of Music offers the Bachelor of Music in the Instrumental Performance Option, a professional degree preparing students for careers as performers, studio teachers, and candidates for advanced study. The program provides intensive applied instrument study alongside rigorous academic training in music theory, music history, ear training, ensemble performance, and piano proficiency. All BM students enter as Pre-Music Majors for their first four semesters before declaring their specific option. All BM options require 120–132 total units; GE areas C1, C2, and IC are waived for BM students. Students must consult with a designated faculty advisor each semester and must attend at least 15 concerts per semester. The Instrumental Performance Option culminates in a Senior Recital. Performing ensembles include the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Bulldog Marching Band (one of 20 bands selected for the 136th Rose Parade), Jazz Orchestra (DownBeat Award-winning), and various chamber ensembles. The FOOSA Philharmonic — a collaboration between the Youth Orchestras of Fresno and Fresno State — recently produced a Grammy-eligible recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 5. Opera Theatre productions provide orchestral pit experience for wind and string students.
