BA in Theatre Arts: General Emphasis
California State University-Fresno — Fresno, CA
About this program
California State University, Fresno offers a BA in Theatre Arts with a General Emphasis through the NAST-accredited Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of Arts and Humanities. The General Emphasis is for students who want broad competencies across the full range of theatre disciplines rather than specializing in acting, design/technology, or theatre education. With the assistance of their advisor and departmental approval, students build an individualized course of advanced study that draws from performance, design, history, literature, and theatre for young audiences. This track provides an excellent foundation for graduate study, professional careers in the performing arts, or a variety of non-performance fields where communication and creative problem-solving skills are valued. The department holds accredited membership in NAST and is affiliated with the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, California Educational Theatre Association, California Alliance for Arts Education, and the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. The department regularly participates in ACTF and ACDA, and students, faculty, and productions have received numerous regional and national honors from both organizations. The major requires 53 units. Core (24 units): The Art of Theatre, Fundamentals of Acting, Theatre Crafts, Design for the Theatre, Fundamentals of Play Direction, Dramatic Literature (satisfies GE Area UD 3), History of the Theatre and Drama I, History of the Theatre and Drama II. Production (8 units): Dramatic Arts Laboratory (repeatable). General Emphasis (21 units): Select 6 units from each of three course groupings — Group 1 (performance): Physical Theatre, Scene Study I, Scene Study II, Acting Period Styles I, Acting Period Styles II, or Directing I; Group 2 (design/technology): Makeup for Theatre, Advanced Theatre Craft I, Advanced Theatre Craft II, Stage Management, Scene Design for Theatre I, or Stage and Television Lighting I; Group 3 (history/literature/education): Creative Movement for Children, Children's Theatre, Play Analysis, Playwriting I, Theatre for Young Audiences, or Topics in Theatre. Approved Electives (3 units): non-major courses, Dramatic Arts Laboratory, or Playwrights' Theatre; DRAMA 89 and DRAMA 189 excluded. New majors must enroll in The Art of Theatre (fall); students must meet with their advisor each semester for program approval.
