About this program

ECU's BFA in Musical Theatre aims to 'attract and train triple threat performers who are equally skilled in singing, dancing and acting, while at the same time recognising that not all prospective students excel equally in each area.' The programme expects students to 'excel in at least one of the three areas and show promise for advancement in the other two.' MUSICAL THEATRE COORDINATOR: Jessica Doyle-Mekkes (doylemekkesj17@ecu.edu; 252-737-2441). Faculty also includes Co-Artistic Producer Jessica Teague (former principal dancer, Dutch National Ballet; Gothenburg Ballet; Royal Ballet of Flanders). A DISTINCTIVE DUAL VOCAL MODEL: Musical Theatre students receive both individual voice lessons (classical and technique focus) AND individual vocal coachings (repertoire and performance focus) — a dual model that mirrors professional training standards and is rarely found at the undergraduate level. DANCE REQUIREMENTS: Students must complete a minimum of 2 tap classes, 2 ballet classes, and 3 jazz classes over the course of the degree. PRODUCTION: ALL BFA Musical Theatre students are REQUIRED to audition for the ECU/Loessin Playhouse season from day one. SETC participation begins freshman year; UPTA available for seniors. SUMMER: The Edge @ ECU summer intensive provides additional training. SCHOLARSHIPS: EC Scholars (4-year full ride); Honors College (4-year full tuition waiver); School of Theatre and Dance merit awards — admissions.ecu.edu/afford/scholarships/.
