About this program
ECU's BFA in Dance — Performance and Choreography is NAST-accredited and provides 'rigorous requirements' preparing students 'through comprehensive technique training in ballet, modern, and jazz, multiple performance opportunities each year, and challenging classes in the creative process alongside coursework in dance history, kinesiology, and pedagogy.' FACULTY: Co-Artistic Producer and Dance Faculty: Jessica Teague (former dancer with Dutch National Ballet; Soloist Gothenburg Ballet; Soloist Royal Ballet of Flanders). Teaching Assistant Professor: Marlayna Locklear (professional dancer performing works by Christopher Huggins, Dwight Rhoden, Ron Brown, Donald Byrd, Ronen Koresh, Donald McKayle; appeared in film Blood Heist directed by James Franco; founding director Indurance Dance Intensive; MFA Choreography and Performance, Montclair State University; certified in Zena Rommett Floor-Barre technique). PROGRAMME STRUCTURE: Rigorous ballet, modern, and jazz from day one, augmented by required courses in dance history, improvisation, choreography, kinesiology, and pedagogy. Electives include tap, pointe, repertory, ballroom, anatomy, and related courses in theatre, art, and music. JURIES: Dance majors must pass a faculty jury evaluation in the spring of their first and second years to maintain enrollment in the programme. CAPSTONE: Senior Choreography Project — a significant original choreographic work presented publicly at the end of senior year. MAXIMUM ATTEMPTS: Students are allowed a maximum of two audition attempts for the dance programme — if not admitted after the second attempt, the student may not reapply (exceptions granted by faculty only in cases of documented extenuating circumstances).
