About this program

ECU's School of Theatre and Dance (est. 1963) is NAST-accredited and offers conservatory-style training within a Division I university. SCHOOL DIRECTOR: Kitt Lavoie (lavoiec25@ecu.edu; 252-328-1191; 105 Messick Theatre Arts Center) — the only living playwright whose work has been produced on all 7 continents; 22 years as Artistic Director of CRY HAVOC Company. THEATRE AREA COORDINATOR: Austin Jones (jonesmatt23@ecu.edu). ADDITIONAL FACULTY: Bryan Conger (MFA Directing, UNC; former interim AD Cape Fear Regional Theatre; directed Pride & Prejudice, Bright Star, Into the Woods, Young Frankenstein); Jessica Teague (former dancer with Dutch National Ballet, Gothenburg Ballet, Royal Ballet of Flanders; now Co-Artistic Producer ECU/Loessin Playhouse). BFA Acting curriculum: acting technique (Stanislavski, Meisner, physical); voice and speech; movement; scene study; Shakespeare; dialects; stage combat; audition technique; industry preparation. ALL BFA Acting students are REQUIRED to audition for the ECU/Loessin Playhouse season from their very first semester — freshmen, sophomores, and transfers all compete for roles from day one. ECU/Loessin Playhouse presents 5 productions October–May annually. Summer Theatre available. SETC participation begins freshman year; UPTA available for seniors. FACILITIES: McGinnis Auditorium (proscenium; 1300 E. Fifth Street); Archie Burnette Studio Theatre (black box; Messick Theatre Arts Center); Wright Performing Arts Center (1,500 seats). SCHOLARSHIPS: EC Scholars (4-year full ride); Honors College (4-year full tuition waiver); School of Theatre and Dance merit awards — admissions.ecu.edu/afford/scholarships/.
