About this program

The Bachelor of Music in Performance at Jackson State University (JSU) is offered through the JSU Department of Music — the only HBCU music department in the state of Mississippi with a fully functional orchestra and string ensemble, an accredited music technology program with a state-of-the-art recording studio and music technology lab, and an opera/musical theater workshop. JSU also has one of the only African music and dance programs at an HBCU. The Department of Music is committed to providing high quality educational opportunities in music education, performance, and technology, enabling students to develop the skills required to assume leadership roles in music education, the music industry, and supporting fields. The Jackson State University Department of Music prepares the 21st Century musician to continue their educational endeavors or enter the competitive field of professional music. Performance majors receive intensive private studio instruction in the major instrument or voice, participate in JSU’s many ensembles, and prepare for careers as professional performers and for graduate study. Jackson State University is a public Historically Black College/University (HBCU) in Jackson, MS, founded 1877. NASM-accredited.
