About this program
The Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies at Jackson State University prepares students for professional careers in jazz performance, contemporary commercial music, and creative music-making. JSU’s NASM-accredited Jazz Studies program features vocal and instrumental jazz combos and is part of the Department of Music’s offerings alongside Music Performance, Music Education, and Music Technology. Faculty in the area are acclaimed performers and educators in the jazz tradition. JSU is the only HBCU music department in the state of Mississippi with a fully functional orchestra/string ensemble and one of the few HBCUs offering an African music and dance ensemble alongside its jazz program — providing rich cross-genre training opportunities.
