About this program
The Bachelor of Arts in Art with Theatre Emphasis at Jackson State University is offered through the Department of Speech Communication and Theatre. The mission of the Theatre Program at JSU is to train students to assume careers as professional artists, managers, designers, and/or technicians in theatre and related disciplines by stressing character, teamwork, leadership, and service. The Department of Speech Communication and Theatre evidence effective communication as the key to our encounters and interactions; with this philosophy, the department is dedicated to preparing its students to become significant contributors to mankind. Goals are achieved through student organizations, co-curricular activities, and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment that enhance each student’s experience. Coursework covers fundamentals of acting, advanced acting, movement for the stage, technical production, scenic design, costume and makeup design, theatre history, Black drama and theatre history (DR 313 — a unique JSU offering treating contributions of Black artists in drama and theatre in America from 1553 to the present), playwriting, directing, and reader’s theatre. JSU is a public HBCU founded 1877.
