About this program
GVSU's BME in Music Education 'enables students to meet certification requirements for teaching music in Michigan PK-12 settings.' NASM-accredited. TWO EMPHASES: (1) Choral/vocal — applied in voice or keyboard; (2) Instrumental — standard band or orchestra instrument. 70-73 MUSIC CREDITS + 39 PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION CREDITS. MID-PROGRAM REVIEW (MPR): Required at end of sophomore year for BME students. Faculty committee evaluation. Successful completion required for upper-division admission. FINAL YEAR: Semester of teacher assisting followed by semester of student teaching (in school with good opportunities for student's specialty). All music education coursework must be completed before teacher assisting.
