About this program
EMU's Department of Theatre Arts is ranked 15th nationally by OnStage Blog — the only Michigan theatre programme in the national top 25. The department is a member of CMTA (College Music Theatre Alliance) and presents 6 Mainstage and 2 Second Stage productions annually. DEPARTMENT DIRECTOR: Meriah Sage (AATE award winner). THREE TOURING COMPANIES: 1. Applied Drama/Theatre for the Young 2. 6 Figures Playback Theatre 3. ENCORE Musical Theatre Troupe (since 1996; Director: R. MacKenzie Lewis) The curriculum is comprehensive — acting, directing, design, technical production, stage management, theatre history, dramatic literature, and applied theatre. Students participate in production from day one. SCHOLARSHIP AUDITIONS — up to $3,000/year: Bi-annual scholarship auditions are held. ACTING SCHOLARSHIP AUDITION REQUIREMENTS: Two contrasting monologues (each 90 seconds maximum; contrasting may be classical/modern or comic/serious); optional 16-bar musical theatre selection (accompanist provided; sheet music must be in 3-ring binder). TECHNICAL SCHOLARSHIP AUDITION REQUIREMENTS: Portfolio review and/or prompt book presentation. Contact: Pam Cardell (pamcardell@emich.edu) for form and scheduling. FACILITIES: Alexander Music Building (86,000 sq ft; 120 Steinway/Yamaha pianos — relevant for cross-programme events); Pease Auditorium (1,500-seat); studio and black box spaces; 124 Judy Sturgis Hill Building.
