About this program

EMU's BA in Musical Theatre is a dedicated triple-threat degree requiring an audition for programme admission. Set within the nationally ranked (15th, OnStage Blog) Department of Theatre Arts, the programme prepares students for professional musical theatre careers through integrated training in acting, voice, and dance. CURRICULUM: Acting technique, voice and movement for stage, applied voice, music theory and skills, dance (jazz, ballet, tap, modern, musical theatre dance), musical theatre history and literature, industry preparation. PRODUCTION: Musical Theatre students participate in the 6 Mainstage + 2 Second Stage production season and may also perform with ENCORE Musical Theatre Troupe (touring company; since 1996; Director: R. MacKenzie Lewis). AUDITION DETAILS: The audition is all-inclusive — acting, singing, and dance assessed in a single 5-minute session. The 'Toledo Surprise' dance combination video is available on the EMU Theatre website for students to prepare the required short MT dance combination before the audition day. A letter of reference from a director or private coach must be emailed directly to the department (not submitted by the student) before the audition. FACILITIES: Pease Auditorium (1,500-seat); Alexander Music Building (86,000 sq ft; 120 Steinway/Yamaha pianos; rehearsal spaces); Warner Dance Studios; studio and black box theatre spaces; 124 Judy Sturgis Hill Building.
