About this program
DBU's BME in Music Education (Choral) prepares musicians for K-12 choral music teaching in Texas public and private schools. The degree is approved by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) and leads to Texas EC-12 All-Level Music Teaching Certification. Program Director: Dr. Becky Morrison (Professor of Music; B.M. Voice, Oklahoma Baptist University; M.M. Voice and Opera, UNT; M.M.E. Boston University; D.M.A. Voice, University of Oklahoma). The curriculum combines music theory, aural skills, music history, conducting (both choral and instrumental), applied voice lessons, and education methods courses with supervised field experience and a student teaching semester. Piano proficiency examination must be passed before student teaching. Seven semesters of Seminar/Performance Lab required (student teaching semester replaces the eighth). Students complete the Sophomore Review (after four semesters) and a recital in their applied concentration area.
