BA in Theatre
Columbus State University — Columbus, GA
About this program
Columbus State University's NAST-accredited BA in Theatre provides a broad theatrical education across all areas — production, performance (acting, directing), design/technical skills, dramatic literature, and theatre history — for students preparing for careers in professional, community, or educational theatre, or for graduate study. Admission to all CSU theatre degrees, including the BA, requires an audition/interview; there is no open-enrollment option. The Riverside Theatre Complex (125,000 sq ft; located at 10th Street and Bay Avenue in downtown Columbus) houses three state-of-the-art performance venues: the Proscenium Theatre (traditional plays and musicals), the Studio Theatre (flexible space for smaller and more intimate productions), and The Lab Theatre (fully functional teaching and performance space for student projects). The department presents over 75 public performances per year, with a mainstage season that typically consists of four plays, one musical, and three children's productions. The Columbus Repertory Theatre brings two additional professional productions to Columbus audiences each summer. The Yancey Center houses faculty offices, two dedicated acting studios, a 2,400 sq ft dance studio, a design studio/lab, a department library (accessible to theatre majors), a 20-station computer lab for design courses, and a fully equipped costume shop. Dr. Larry Dooley (Chair; Ph.D. Theatre History and Criticism, Indiana University; NAST Commission on Accreditation member; Chair since 2010) teaches theatre history, literature, playwriting, script analysis, creative drama, and acting. Faculty include Molly Claassen (Associate Professor; claassen_molly@columbusstate.edu), Christopher Dills (dills_christopher@columbusstate.edu; 706-507-8414), Kimberly Garcia (garcia_kimberly@columbusstate.edu; 706-507-8406), Steven Graver (graver_steven@columbusstate.edu; 706-507-8408), Tim McGraw (mcgraw_timothy@columbusstate.edu; 706-507-8412), and David Turner (turner_david4@columbusstate.edu; 706-507-8420). The Musical Theatre Performance Certificate (MTC) is an intensive add-on certificate combining credits in Music, Theatre, and Dance, available only to students already admitted to a Music or Theatre bachelor's degree at CSU. MTC admission requires a separate additional audition (video submission via Acceptd: full-body video containing a song, monologue, and choreography; song and monologue ≤90 seconds total; accompaniment required for song). Students must maintain a 2.75 GPA in their program of study throughout their enrollment. All theatre majors must earn at least a C in all field and professional courses.
