About this program

Columbia College Chicago's BFA in Acting for Stage and Screen is a rigorous professional training program within the School of Theatre and Dance, led by Allen and Lynn Turner Director Dr. Jimmy A. Noriega, Ph.D. — President of the American Society for Theatre Research, Kennedy Center Gold Medallion recipient (2023), Fulbright Scholar, author of two books on Latinx and Queer theatre, and director of 50+ English and Spanish language productions staged in 15 countries. The program is run as a professional theatre, providing "rigorous, complete, one-on-one training" from a faculty of working professionals who include Tony Award winners and nationally recognized Chicago theatre artists. Training integrates Stanislavski-based technique with voice/movement, physical approaches, on-camera technique, stage combat, and screen performance. Students are encouraged to audition for productions from their first semester — the school produces approximately 40 productions per year across the Getz Theatre Center's four venues. The school is home to one of the country's only stage combat programs, and the Stage Combat Minor (four-semester sequence) leads to national certification as a stage combat specialist. Comedy students spend an immersive semester at the famous Second City, Chicago. All productions are performed at the Getz Theatre Center (72 E. 11th St., Chicago, IL 60605), which houses the historic Getz Theater (main stage), Courtyard Theatre, Studio 404, and a fourth performance space. The Dance Center (1306 S. Michigan Ave.) hosts all dance and movement-based work. The Faculty Recognition Award is Columbia's talent-based scholarship program: awards range from $500 to full tuition, with five full-tuition awards available annually. All BFA and BMus submissions are automatically considered.
