BA in Music
Columbia College Chicago — Chicago, IL
About this program
Columbia College Chicago's BA in Music is the school's broad-based undergraduate music degree, providing foundational training across music theory, history, contexts, and contemporary applications within a flexible liberal arts framework. Students choose elective courses and ensembles appropriate to their individual goals, with careful planning allowing full integration of the liberal arts core curriculum alongside music study. All music majors participate in ensemble courses covering contemporary, urban, and popular styles (pop, rock, jazz, R&B), ensuring collaborative music-making experience across genres. Private lessons from professional faculty musicians are available. The degree is well suited for double majors — combining music with film, television, business, communications, audio arts, or other disciplines — or for students who want a broad music education without the intensive specialisation of a BMus. The Music Center (1014 S. Michigan Ave.) hosts over 200 performances and workshops per year, providing a rich environment for musical growth and professional connection. The **Vocal Performance Minor** and **Contemporary Music Minor** are available for students who want focused supplemental study. The degree is built on the same foundational coursework as the BMus degrees, allowing students to develop deep musicianship skills while retaining flexibility.
