BM in Music Performance
Colorado Mesa University — Grand Junction, CO
About this program
CMU's NASM-accredited BM in Music Performance provides intensive applied study on a primary instrument or voice within a full liberal arts context at an affordable public university price. All applicants must pass a performance audition on their primary instrument or voice, a music theory placement exam, and a piano proficiency assessment — admission to CMU does not guarantee admission to a music degree program. Students receive private applied lessons each semester, participate in major ensembles, and complete coursework in theory, music history, and musicianship. CMU's Department of Music encompasses traditional and innovative ensembles, from the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, and Vocal Arts Ensemble to the Rowdy Brass Band, Commercial Ensemble, and Mariachi. The CMU Jazz Festival and Jazztopia Jazz Workshop (established by Department Head Darin Kamstra) are annual flagship events. Department Head Kamstra — principal timpanist/percussionist of the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra, DMA from the University of Illinois — leads a faculty that includes Brian Krinke (Curtis Institute of Music; Juilliard), Christopher McKim (Director of Vocal Studies), and Jonathan Hinkle (Director of Bands). In 2024, the CMU Percussion Ensemble performed at the Edeta Arts Percussion Festival in Valencia, Spain.
