BFA in Theatre Arts — Music Theatre Concentration
Colorado Mesa University — Grand Junction, CO
About this program
CMU's BFA Music Theatre Concentration is designed to create triple threats — students who are highly trained in all three disciplines of musical theatre: music, acting, and dance. Training begins in the first semester with music theory, ear training, private voice instruction, choir, and class piano, alongside Acting I & II, Ballet, and Tap. This rigorous first-year foundation ensures that students develop technical proficiency from the start. The curriculum continues to build through all four years with advanced vocal technique, musical theatre scene study, acting for the musical stage, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary styles, and advanced dance. Students participate in Main Stage productions, Experimental Theatre productions, choral ensembles, dance concerts, student-directed one-acts, and technical crew assignments. Audition techniques and résumé writing are integrated throughout the program from the third year onward. The program's director of Music Theatre is Jeremy Franklin, who co-directs Mesa OutLoud! alongside Department Head Mo LaMee. Working graduates from the BM Music Theatre program consistently cite the program's highly personalized instruction from skilled professors — all working performers, coaches, directors, teachers, and technicians — as the primary reason for their success in gaining professional employment.
