About this program

The Bachelor of Music in Music / Instrumental Music Teaching PreK-12 at Bethany College prepares students for careers as PreK-12 instrumental music teachers, leading to Kansas state teaching licensure. The program is offered through Bethany’s NASM-accredited Department of Music (NASM-accredited since 1935) in coordination with the teacher education program. Students complete the music education core curriculum (theory, history, ear training, applied lessons, ensembles), instrumental methods coursework (woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings), conducting, music education foundations, and student teaching. The mission of the Bethany College Music Department is to nurture, challenge and guide developing musicians, to train the future educators for both classroom and studio areas, and to provide performance opportunities for students, faculty, and community members. Bethany’s unique heritage as one of the oldest Lutheran-affiliated colleges in the Midwest, combined with its long musical tradition (Messiah Festival since 1882), provides a distinctive backdrop for music education. Bethany is a private Lutheran liberal arts college affiliated with the ELCA; founded 1881.
