About this program

The Bachelor of Arts in Music at Bethany College is the broad liberal arts music degree, combining a foundation in music theory, history, musicianship, and performance with the flexibility to pursue interdisciplinary studies, double majors, and pre-professional study. The Department of Music has been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) since 1935, with this rich tradition of musical excellence remaining strong and vibrant to this very day. The mission of the Bethany College Music Department is to nurture, challenge and guide developing musicians, to train the future educators for both classroom and studio areas, and to provide performance opportunities for students, faculty, and community members. In addition, the department strives to educate and engage audience members in the central Kansas region and beyond. A large number of students, both music majors and non-majors, participate in campus music ensembles, lessons, and classes. Large choral and instrumental ensembles tour both regionally and internationally, and a variety of large and small ensembles enable students of all levels of ability to develop their musical skills, find personal enjoyment, and become part of Bethany's close musical community. As members of the Bethany Oratorio Society, students join in the tradition of performing Handel's Messiah dating back to 1882 — the longest running annual performance of Messiah in North America. Bethany College is a private Lutheran liberal arts institution in Lindsborg, founded in 1881 by Swedish Lutheran immigrants and affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Bethany College students were invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in 2026.
