BM in Music Education
Alma College — Alma, MI
About this program
The Bachelor of Music in Music Education at Alma College prepares students for careers as K-12 music teachers in Michigan and beyond, with the music education degree leading toward Michigan teacher certification. The program is offered through Alma’s NASM-accredited Music Department alongside the BMus in Performance and BA in Music. Music education students study with Alma’s experienced music faculty — themselves professional performers and respected scholars — and receive both the broad musical and pedagogical training necessary for K-12 music teaching, plus the foundational musicianship to pursue graduate study or change to performance or other music-related careers if desired. Alma’s Music Department aims to provide courses and curricula for music majors so that they may have the necessary foundation to pursue graduate study, teaching, performing or music-related fields; to strengthen students’ musical skills by expanding proficiency in technique, heightening interpretive insight and facilitating the understanding of pedagogical tools and methods; to be an artistic presence within the Alma College community and beyond; and to provide the general student with a basic understanding of the language and history of music. The program is housed in the Heritage Center for the Performing Arts and benefits from Steinway pianos throughout the music department’s classrooms and practice rooms.
