About this program

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre at Alma College is a 146-credit performance-intensive degree designed for students preparing for careers as professional actors, directors, designers, and theatre educators. The Theatre Department is motivated by the belief that the performing arts are vital and necessary to the human experience, exploring the mystery and exhilaration of human relationships and the infinite aspects of relationships to self, to each other, to our world, and to larger spiritual forces. The Theatre Department is committed to challenging students to aspire to high standards of excellence, awakening the importance and value of the culture, history and tradition of theatre, promoting critical and analytical skills enhanced by creative thinking, providing quality opportunities for both majors and non-majors to actively participate in all areas of production, exposing students to various styles, genres and methods of performance and production, and preparing students with the necessary skills to pursue vocations in Theatre. The BFA Theatre is housed in the Department of Theatre and Dance, chaired by Dr. Scott A. Mackenzie (Fitzmaurice Voicework Associate Teacher; voice and acting specialist). Students perform in four productions per academic year at the 500-seat Heritage Center for the Performing Arts. Spring Term offers off-campus immersion experiences with travel to New York and London for theatre productions, supported by the Venture Grant ($2,500 for off-campus experiential learning).
