BA in Dance
Alma College — Alma, MI
About this program
The Bachelor of Arts in Dance at Alma College is a comprehensive dance major emphasizing rigorous studio technique training across ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap, and other styles, alongside choreography, dance pedagogy, dance history, and performance. As a dance major at Alma, students take rigorous studio technique courses in ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap and more, and examine practical, pedagogical and philosophical approaches to teaching dance in different settings. Students participate in the Alma College Dance Company, the performance arm of the dance program, performing in three dance concerts a year. The dance program is offered through the Department of Theatre and Dance and centers on contemporary dance technique and philosophy. Director of Dance Kayt MacMaster (Assistant Professor) leads the program with Highland Dance Instructor Allison Murad teaching Scottish-tradition forms tied to Alma's distinctive Scottish heritage. Demand for dancers and choreographers is high — the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 27% growth in the field between 2021 and 2031, far outpacing the national average. Alma's well-rounded dance curriculum prepares graduates to thrive in careers including professional dance company performance, choreography, dance instruction, physical therapy, arts administration, and dance production.
