BA in Music
Smith College — Northampton, MA
About this program
Smith College is the largest women's college in the United States, a highly selective private liberal arts institution in Northampton, Massachusetts (acceptance rate approximately 36%). Smith is a founding member of the Five Colleges Consortium — along with Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst — allowing students to take courses across all five campuses. The Smith College Music Department is one of the nation's most distinguished at the liberal arts level. Students may major in music, take lessons and perform in ensembles as non-majors, and benefit from the full Five College music community. The BA in Music at Smith integrates performance, theory, history, ethnomusicology, and composition within a rigorous liberal arts curriculum. Ensembles include the Chamber Singers, Symphony Orchestra, and multiple chamber groups; faculty and student recitals are offered throughout the year. No audition is required to declare the music major. Smith is also one of the few undergraduate institutions offering an opera course — Opera Workshop and Vocal Performance seminar give singers direct stage experience in Mendenhall Center for the Performing Arts.
