About this program
Smith College is the largest women's college in the United States. The Dance Department is ranked in the top 5% of U.S. dance programmes nationally and is part of the Five College Dance consortium — one of the most distinguished collaborative dance education environments in the country, combining the programmes of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, Smith, and UMass Amherst into a single faculty and curriculum. The BA in Dance at Smith has choreography and performance as its focus, with students presenting public choreographic work each semester from Year 1. The curriculum positions choreography and performance as forms of critical inquiry, supporting diverse performance styles, compositional methods, dance history, kinesiology, somatic science, dance pedagogy, and cultural studies. All dance degrees are awarded as BA (not BS or BFA), reflecting Smith's liberal arts commitment. The MFA in Dance is an acclaimed graduate programme.
