About this program
The Certificate in Music Theatre supports emerging artists from the School of Communication (majoring in Theatre, Dance, or Performance Studies) and the Bienen School of Music (majoring in Voice) to create a second area of specialization important to their development as musical-theatre artists. Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies majors take voice classes and are exposed to different music offerings; voice majors receive training in acting and other theatre courses. Students who are admitted to the program on the basis of their vocal and dance auditions develop the versatile performance skills demanded by this specialized art form — taking specialized courses in music-theatre techniques, plus acting, voice, musicianship, and dance. Students also study the history and creation of music theatre. Students must remain in Theatre, Dance, Performance Studies, or Voice to stay in the MT Certificate; leaving an eligible major for a non-eligible one requires leaving the Certificate.
