About this program
Fort Hays State University's Department of Music and Theatre is NASM-accredited and offers five undergraduate music and theatre majors. FHSU describes itself as 'big enough to offer dozens of academic and performance opportunities, but small enough that student artists do not become faces in the crowd.' MUSIC DEGREES: BA IN MUSIC: Liberal arts generalist degree. Multiple career paths beyond professional performance (music education, music industry, arts administration, music business/industry, communications). 'A BA in Music is a perfect degree' for students who want to study music without committing to a professional performance or education track. Available ONLINE. No audition requirement; however, 'previous experience in music is strongly recommended. Students with no previous experience are likely to struggle in the areas of music theory and performance.' BM IN MUSIC COMPOSITION: For students interested in composing and arranging. Audition and theory placement required. Advanced study in composition techniques with performance component. BM IN MUSIC EDUCATION: Prepares for K-12 music teaching certification in Kansas. Concentrations: Band; Orchestra; Choir; General Music. State of Kansas shares licensure reciprocity with most states. Audition required. 'Your professional music education training can take you most anywhere you want to go!' BM IN MUSIC PERFORMANCE: Professional performance degree. 'Designed to take your skills to the next level through advanced musical training with outstanding faculty.' 68% of coursework in the major. Students declare a primary area of study: lessons, ensembles, theory, history, analysis, and literature. 'Students entering this program should have a strong background in music and be prepared for intensive studies.' Audition required. ENSEMBLES (available to music majors AND non-majors): Bands; Choir/Voice ensembles; Composition/New Music ensembles; Piano Studio; String/Orchestra Studies; Jazz. Non-majors welcome in all ensembles. THEATRE DEGREES (contact department for current offerings): The website lists Theatre as a program area under 'Music and Theatre.' The Theatre page describes a 'strong liberal arts training program with an emphasis in comprehensive learning' preparing students for careers in acting, musical theatre, or design technology.
