BFA in Dance Performance
Fort Hays State University — Hays, KS
About this program
The Ailey/Fordham BFA in Dance is a unique program combining the artistic pre-eminence of The Ailey School — the official school of the world-famous Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater — with Fordham University's exceptional Jesuit liberal arts education. The program has operated for more than 25 years. TWO SEPARATE APPLICATIONS REQUIRED: 1. Fordham University Application via Common App (declare Dance as major; select Early Action; deadline November 1). Note: Apply to Fordham College at Lincoln Center (FCLC) — not Rose Hill (Bronx) campus. 2. The Ailey School Dance Application (by November 1; separate from Fordham; at ailey.org). IMPORTANT: Acceptance requires being MUTUALLY ACCEPTED by BOTH institutions. AILEY DANCE APPLICATION INCLUDES: Detailed information about your dance training. Two dance photographs: (1) standing in tendu à la seconde, arms in second position; and (2) standing in first arabesque, leg raised — both in ballet shoes, leotard, and tights. An essay discussing your professional goals. AUDITION PROCESS: Applicants showing highest potential are invited to audition. $45 audition fee (paid to The Ailey School; required to secure audition spot). Auditions held January, February, or March in New York City or other cities. International students: The Ailey School does not require in-person audition for international applicants (video submission option available). CURRICULUM — DAILY TECHNIQUE CLASSES: Classical ballet. Horton technique (Alvin Ailey's primary technique). Graham-based modern dance. Additional techniques: Jazz; West African; Improvisation; Dance Composition; Repertory Workshop; Anatomy and Kinesiology; more. Liberal arts coursework: music; social sciences; philosophy; theology; history; foreign languages; and more — all at Fordham's Lincoln Center campus. PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES: Ailey Citigroup Theater performances (professional NYC venue). Fordham University's Pope Auditorium performances. Several performance opportunities per year starting in first year. Senior year: Ailey Fordham Student Dancers — performing in venues throughout the tri-state area. Guest choreographers: Adam Barruch; Robert Battle (Artistic Director, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater); Sonia Dawkins; Joanna Kotze; Jamar Roberts; and others. FINANCIAL AID: Through Fordham University only ($45 Ailey annual physical therapy fee is the only Ailey financial obligation). Fordham Financial Aid: 212-636-6700. In addition to existing need-based aid and merit scholarships, applicants are evaluated for audition-based artistic scholarships. TRANSFER STUDENTS: May spend a minimum of THREE years enrolled. Transfer applicants should submit the Fordham application by April 1 and are encouraged to submit the Dance Application by the same date.
