BM in Music Education (Teacher Licensure)
Eastern Illinois University — Charleston, IL
About this program
EIU's BM — Teacher Licensure has 'a long history of both teacher education and a vibrant music programme.' Students begin observing and teaching in music classrooms from their very first semester of enrollment — this immediate, hands-on engagement continues throughout all semesters of the programme. THREE CONCENTRATIONS (all lead to Illinois K–12 music teaching licensure): 1. Instrumental Music — band, orchestra, jazz; instrumental pedagogy, ensemble conducting, rehearsal techniques. 2. Vocal/Choral Music — choral conducting, vocal pedagogy, sight-singing, ear training. 3. General Music — broadest approach; Orff, Kodály, and general music classroom methodologies. All three concentrations share the same Music Core and Professional Course sequence (College of Education and Professional Studies). Graduates are prepared to teach music at all levels — elementary through high school. FACILITIES, ENSEMBLES, AND SCHOLARSHIPS: Same as BM Performance — 568-seat Concert Hall, 175-seat Recital Hall, Recording Studio, Eastern Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Panther Marching Band, Jazz Combo and ensembles, chamber music groups. SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE: Audition on or before March 1 for automatic scholarship consideration — same as BM Performance.
