BFA in Choreography
Coker University — Hartsville, SC
About this program
Coker University's BFA in Choreography is an intensive professional training program for dancers whose primary commitment is to performance and choreography as creative artists. The program provides training with nationally recognized guest artists and faculty within the Coker Repertory Dance Company, offering students a unique environment of attentive instruction, freedom for artistic growth, and intensive studio work. The curriculum develops fundamentals in dance technique, performance, and composition, while also refining technical and creative abilities and skills for observation, evaluation, and scholarly discussion of dance. As a student's dance aesthetic and artistry develop, the program prepares graduates for performance-related careers and graduate study. The BFA's emphasis on creating an environment with attentive instruction alongside freedom for artistic growth distinguishes it from larger programs. Coker's intimate size means students receive the kind of individualized attention that fuels remarkable development. Coker maintains many of the facilities and resources typically found in much larger bachelor's in dance programs, including outstanding venues and access to world-class instruction from faculty and guest artists. The Watson Theatre, Black Box Theatre, and dedicated dance spaces host informal dance concerts, formal productions, and guest artist performances throughout the year. Informal Dance Concerts (fall and spring) feature student and faculty choreography in modern, jazz, musical theatre, contemporary, and hip-hop styles, and are open to the campus and community.
