About this program
Coker University's BA in Theatre is housed in the McCall School of Visual and Performing Arts within the Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center — a 40,000 sq ft facility featuring the Watson Theatre (466-seat proscenium) and the Black Box Theatre (up to 100 seats), two dance studios, a music/choral rehearsal studio, a costume shop, a scene shop, a round-table classroom, and dressing rooms. The program offers four concentrations: Performance (spotlight training in voice, movement, and acting; students required to audition for all productions), Musical Theatre (triple-threat voice, acting, dance, and Broadway/Hollywood Musicals coursework), Technical Theatre (set, lighting, sound design, stage management), and Writing (playwriting and dramatic text). No audition is required for entrance into any degree track. The department's philosophy is a round-table, discussion-based learning model that cultivates critical thinking while surrounding students with a creative community. Brian Guidry-LeTraunik — Theatre Program Coordinator, MFA in Acting from Western Illinois University, certified teacher of stage combat (SAFD; the only such person in South Carolina), and author of A History of Contemporary Stage Combat — teaches acting, directing, movement, voice, musical theatre, and stage combat, and directs in the main-stage season. He is also an active professional fight choreographer whose recent external credits include Charleston Stage Company (Dial M for Murder), Sumter Little Theatre (A Streetcar Named Desire), and Center Stage Greenville (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder). The Opera Workshop gives students experience in role preparation, character development, musicianship, acting, and movement through fully staged one-act operas and musical theatre scenes, sometimes with living composers.
