BFA in Jazz and Contemporary Music — Instrumental Concentration
The New School — New York, NY
About this program
The School of Jazz and Contemporary Music at The New School's College of Performing Arts offers a BFA in Jazz and Contemporary Music with an Instrumental Concentration. The curriculum combines technical, conceptual, aesthetic, and historical coursework with an artist-as-mentor approach. Students choose from 80 ensembles recast each semester — including the Electric Miles Davis (directed by Adam Holzman, a longtime Miles Davis collaborator), Studio Orchestra (directed by Ingrid and Christine Jensen), Herbie Hancock Ensemble (Kris Davis), Thelonious Monk Ensemble, Charlie Parker Ensemble, Charles Mingus Ensemble, Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, Rhythm & Blues Ensemble, Progressive Rock Ensemble, Wayne Shorter Ensemble, John Coltrane Ensemble, Super Trios, Live Drum 'n' Bass, and The Art of the Rhythm Section. Founded by David Levy (former Parsons dean), saxophonist Arnie Lawrence, and Paul Weinstein, the School holds the philosophy that artists should be mentors. Students take classes across The New School, including Parsons School of Design and Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts. The School has housed Beacons in Jazz awards.
