About this program

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education (Pre-K-12) at Buffalo State University, SUNY prepares students for careers as Pre-K-12 music teachers in New York State and beyond, leading to NY State Initial Teacher Certification in Music. The program is offered through Buffalo State’s NASM-accredited Music Department in coordination with the School of Education. Music Education students must successfully audition and interview with the Music Department faculty for admission, and admission is based on the outcome of the audition and interview. Successful applicants will be contacted to arrange an audition and interview. Prospective students are afforded two opportunities to audition; a third audition is not permitted. Freshmen or transfer students who have a successful audition but do not pass the interview will be offered admission to the Bachelor of Arts in Music degree (with the option to re-attempt admission to Music Education). Acceptance to the Upper Division Music Education program (typically junior year) requires satisfactory progress through the music theory and aural perceptions sequence (MUS 330 Music Theory III and MUS 318 Aural Perceptions III) plus a successful jury and Music Education Interview. High School Average of 85% or higher (collegiate GPA equivalent of 3.0) required for admission. Buffalo State is part of the SUNY system serving approximately 9,000 students.
