About this program

The Bachelor of Arts in Music at Buffalo State University, SUNY is designed to provide candidates with broad musical knowledge and applied experiences in a liberal arts context, offering opportunities to integrate music into a variety of disciplines. Candidates choose from three concentrations: Music Industry (hands-on experience in music technology, music content creation, and music entrepreneurship — courses in audio recording, music business, live performance, music creativity, and musicianship); Performance (intensive applied study, requiring 8 semesters of applied lessons and a junior recital); and General Studies (broad musical foundations supporting integration with other liberal arts disciplines). All Music Department faculty participate in the BA degree, teaching courses in music theory, history, literature, and aural perception, leading instrumental and vocal ensembles, and offering applied studio instruction. Buffalo State boasts state-of-the-art music facilities including two recording studios, the Performing Arts Center, the Ciminelli Recital Hall, and a large ensemble rehearsal room. The Music Department is one of the most outstanding and selective in New York; to be accepted, students must audition, submit an essay, and complete a one-on-one interview with a faculty member, ensuring that students will be surrounded by peers truly committed to the study of music. Buffalo State is a comprehensive university in the SUNY system serving approximately 9,000 students.
