BA in Theatre and Performance
Spelman College — Atlanta, GA
About this program
Spelman College is the most prestigious historically Black women's liberal arts college in the United States — ranked #1 HBCU for 19 consecutive years, and among the top 37 liberal arts colleges nationally. The Department of Theatre and Performance is housed in the LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Samuel L. Jackson Performing Arts Center. The Theatre and Performance major takes an interdisciplinary approach, encouraging students to experiment across performance modalities: text, film, songs, and site-specific work. African American cultural forms are central to the curriculum alongside diverse global methodologies — positioning students at the intersection of contemporary performance practice, social activism, and arts citizenship. The department has a rich tradition of producing working artists and civic leaders. Natalie Sowell (formerly of UNC Greensboro and Hampshire College) serves as the new department chair. Dance Performance and Choreography is a separate department, also offering a BA.
