About this program
Southern Utah University's BS Theatre (General) program offers a comprehensive liberal arts and science approach to theatre education. The program's purpose is to encourage, promote, and sustain both a nurturing and challenging educational environment that cultivates students' aesthetic, creative, and scholarly potential. Through a combination of foundational theatre courses and customizable content electives, students develop competencies in acting, voice and diction, theatrical production, design analysis, directing, theatre history, and dramaturgy. The program emphasizes personalized mentorship with faculty advisors, annual assessment through audition or portfolio review, and engagement with the local community and professional artists. As an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST), SUU offers unique collaboration opportunities with the Utah Shakespeare Festival through shared facilities, employment, and fellowship opportunities. Students also have chances to create and perform their own work through the student production company Second Studio and departmentally sponsored black box grant productions.
