Sam Houston State University is a public comprehensive university in Huntsville, Texas — approximately 70 miles north of Houston — enrolling over 21,000 students. The Department of Theatre and Musical Theatre is housed in the College of Arts and Media. SHSU has a strong national reputation in KCACTF, having been invited to perform at the Regional KCACTF Festival consistently since 2000 and having performed The Laramie Project at the National Festival in Washington, D.C. in 2003. The department produces 8–10 productions per year in a nine-month academic year, plus summer productions, and maintains professional internship programmes with Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS), STAGES Repertory Theatre, Classical Theatre Company, A.D. Players, Texas Repertory Theatre Company, and Main Street Theatre — all in Houston. The BFA in Musical Theatre (131 credit hours) includes a Sophomore Gate evaluation. The BFA in Theatre offers Acting & Directing and Design & Technology emphases. A BFA with Teaching Certification prepares students for EC-12 Texas certification. Performance, management, design, and technical scholarships are available.
