BA in Theatre
Salem State University — Salem, MA
About this program
Salem State University is a public liberal arts university in Salem, Massachusetts — 15 miles north of Boston — enrolling approximately 7,000 students. Salem State is the only four-year public university in New England accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST), distinguishing it among public institutions in the region for the rigour of its theatre curriculum and production standards. The Department of Theatre and Speech Communication is housed in the Sophia Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts. The programme produces four main-stage productions per academic year and offers two degree tracks: a BA in Theatre (broad liberal arts preparation across performance and technical concentrations) and a BFA in Theatre (intensive conservatory-style training requiring audition/portfolio review, with concentrations in performance, design, stage management, technical theatre, and directing). The BFA requires an audition/portfolio for admission — applicants may apply directly as incoming students or transfer internally after freshman year. No audition is required for the BA.
