About this program
Salem State University is a public liberal arts university in Salem, Massachusetts — 15 miles north of Boston — enrolling approximately 7,000 students. The Department of Music and Dance offers a BA in Dance alongside its music degree. The Sophia Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts provides the performance venue for all dance concerts and events. The BA in Dance at Salem State features two core-area concentrations: hip hop and contemporary modern. Students develop across a diverse range of techniques including modern, hip-hop, ballet, improvisation, jazz, cyphering, and world dance. The programme hosts world-class choreographers and dance companies annually — recent guest companies have included Alvin Ailey II, Taylor 2, Doug Varone and Dancers, and Boston Dance Theatre. The Salem Dance Ensemble (faculty-run) and Repertory Dance Theatre (student club) provide additional performance and choreographic opportunities beyond the annual concert seasons.
