About this program

Saint Edward's University is a private, Catholic liberal arts institution in Austin, Texas, ranked among the top 5 Regional Universities in the West by U.S. News & World Report. The Department of Performing Arts offers two theatre degrees — the BFA in Acting and the BA in Theatre Arts — and is home to the Mary Moody Northen Theatre (MMNT), one of the most distinctive undergraduate performance venues in the United States. MMNT holds the distinction of being the only undergraduate performing arts programme in the United States that produces a full season under an Actors' Equity Association (AEA) agreement. This means BFA Acting students work alongside professional AEA members — including Academy Award winners, Broadway veterans, and TV and film stars — and can earn points towards their own AEA membership while still enrolled. The Theatre Communications Group lists MMNT as a member institution. Sheila Gordon (Associate Professor, MFA Carnegie Mellon/Moscow Art Theatre) heads the BFA in Acting programme. The BFA in Acting requires an internal audition in the spring of the first year — admitted students complete a semester of foundational theatre coursework before auditioning to formally enter the programme. Four mainstage productions are presented each year in MMNT's intimate arena/thrust configuration. Austin's extraordinary performing arts ecosystem — more than 80 theatre companies, 200 live music venues, SXSW, and ACL Music Festival — provides unmatched professional exposure and internship opportunities.
