About this program
NSU's School of Creative and Performing Arts has been recognized as an Area of Excellence among Louisiana colleges and universities. Students can pursue music majors across performance, composition, education, and music-industry tracks, and all NSU students (regardless of major) may participate in ensembles and compete for music scholarships. Key ensembles include: the NSU Choirs (more than 150 singers across five ensembles, directed by Dr. Shane Thomas); the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra (directed by Dr. Douglas Bakenhus, combining students, faculty, and community musicians); Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensembles; and the 300-member 'Spirit of Northwestern' Marching Band.
